  • Okay, this list is much closer to what I'd call my favourites, if I bothered to figure out which ones were my favourites. Top 50, by number of plays per week since I've had the track, excluding tracks added in the last eight weeks or tracks with fewer than 5 plays (limits chosen by experiment, to remove really recently acquired songs which I barely know yet, and recent live versions of songs that are already on the list, but not remove 'Always the Moon' or the live version of 'A Talk With George', because I really think the studio version should be on the list)and with others removed manually to keep this post within the size limit:

    Album titles for Things are not necessarily accurate, since I got them from the podcast rather than the albums (though I did eventually buy a box set at the first JoCoLoCo), and filled in the album names myself somehow, for some reason.
  • Argh, I should have read the first post in the thread... I think I was confusing this thread with another one asking a similar question, which I did read the first post of, and also posted a similar list to once before.
  • apparently my copy/paste functions are not working...? so i cannot update the list properly, but i would like to drop always the moon from the list and add the demo version of dance, soterios johnson, dance.
  • So with three08's changes this is where we stand. In a few days I would like to begin a brackets trournament based on this list. I think it'll be a 20 bracket double elim. So yeah it might take a few months to finish up. But it seemed like 20 was a good round number that got most of the songs that had more than one vote. I think the first thing will be a mini tourney to determine the bottom 4 slots because there are 9 songs with 2 votes each. I'll give it through November 30th for any changes.

  • I have no idea what a brackets tournament is, but I guess I'll settle on Space Doggity, Still Alive, I Feel Fantastic, Womb With A View and A Talk With George (just to prove I'm not a slave to the machine) for my five favourites.
  • Ok. I meant to do this yesterday but was having problems with cut and paste. You may resume updating as the mood strikes you but this list is what I am basing the tournament on. I hope there is no major mistakes on what i reposted here because I had to piece it back together after making the last updates.
    So anyway... as you it worked out there is now a 9 way tie for the 20th slot. I'm going to do a mini tourney to figure out which song gets in.

  • @Robgonzo: I'm curious why the 20 song limit? I think a 32 song bracket would work out more evenly (and of course get more songs in!).

    That way, you get in all the songs with at least two votes. Then since it's your idea, you can pick a few of your favorites from the 1-vote songs to fill out the bracket. (Not that you asked me, but I'd go with A Talk With George, Betty and Me, and My Beige Bear :)

    I can't believe you heretics only have two votes for Mandelbrot Set. It's probably my favorite overall. The math/science gene really skipped my generation. I can DO it and I got good grades in school without too much work but I've never been exactly gifted. But there's something romantic about Mandelbrot Set -- this idea that math and science are the culmination of man's achievements -- that we can know literally anything that can be known through observation and experiment. It's inspiring to think that even as confusing as the world gets, there's a universal truth at least in numbers. Think about comic books! There's a reason so many superheroes are scientists on the side! Sure, it provides a convenient background, but so many of these characters came about in the early modern age or the atomic age; scientists were the heroes of mankind, so it follows they'd be superheroes, too, right? I'm rambling. I'm ranting. But I get that way. Love love LOVE Mandelbrot set.

    Only recently heard Space Doggity but it's so staggeringly sad. There's something again romantic about space and the thought of introducing tragic sacrifice to the purity of space like that -- it just gets to me.

    Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but for whatever reason I remember binary notation going from right to left.

    Nonvivant - I love Mandelbrot Set, I've also excelled at math much more effortlessly than my peers, but it's really hard to stick it into the top 5 as JoCo has so many great songs.

    Not really binary as much as very simple base 1 counting. I are not smart enough to know binary ;)

    edit - or is it base 2... I think it's base 2... I really should have went to school more and the arcade less.

  • It is indeed base 2 which is also known as binary, Encubed is right though in that binary goes: 1,10,11,100,101,110,111,1000,1001,1010 = 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 so you wrote it backwards. Thus the old joke "there are 10 types of people those who understand binary and those who don't" as 10 = 2 (01 != 2 (!= is does not equal)).

    I am still in what you people would call high school (making an assumption of your nationality, but high school is more globally known). So I haven't majored in anything yet. Music theory is all very much above my head. I just like listening to good music.

    He does play Mr. Fancy Pants with his Zendrum using samples of the original recording. That's pretty entertaining :)

    Meh. If you don't think that Sibling Rivalry should count, it can be replaced with Betty and Me.

    I considered the fact that it isn't really his song. It doesn't negate the fact that I love to hear it....multiple times in a row! Haha! :)

    But I love the music, even if JoCo doesn't always sing in the perfect range for me to sing along without sounding like a tone-deaf humpbacked whale.
