Game development: Humanity
A previous discussion gave me the idea of developing a game to raise the consciousness of humanity (hopefully).
1. Each player starts with an identity that they are born into (race, sex, family values, and a few other things babies don't control). Along with these come norms that they grow up with, which the player can decide whether they buy into or not, but with consequences based on their choices.
2. Player norms include stereotypes about themselves (we're Irish and Irishmen drink!) as well as others (you're born into a family that hate all people who wear turbans)
3. Each player gets an avatar that displays physical characteristics to the world (you're avatar is female has identifiable tattoos, combat boots, and form fitting black clothing, there's a holster on your hip, but no badge)
4. The game play proceeds based on a lifetime, starting from the time they are able to influence their own lives. (we skip infancy, toddlerhood, and senility) All players are essentially the same age, but age will have no consequence.
5. Action cards will allow you to either go along with, or challenge norms; either your own or someone elses, and depending on the other players, your action may only affect you, could affect another player, or could potentially involve all players (Family Reunion! If you have not violated any norms +1 Humanity points, but if you have -1 for each norm you've gone against)
6. The goal of the game is to unite humanity. Scenario cards will dictate the reason humanity is to be united, and more than one scenario can come into play, and can either work in synergy or in opposition to each other. (White Hood Party in the Woods - The Future of Humanity, 10 pm, bring a hood)
7. Players win or loose Humanity points as a result of actions (Swedish Parade! Gain one Humanity point for attending, and one more if you're actually Swedish, lose one Humanity point if you stay home) Note that your norms may influence your actions, such as if you have a norm of hating the Swedes (?) which would keep you from attending.
8. The winner is determined by the person who is the most human when humanity is united
9. In order for humanity to finally be united, certain individuals may have to be removed from the game (killed, or isolated from society)
It's up to each player to determine if it's best to join or oppose other players, but every action has a consequence, and joining with others may isolate you from certain other players (your family norm is to never talk to anyone of a different color than you), or may cause them to view you as an ally or foe as a result of your action (You join Auntie Laura for drinks). Similarly, going against your own norms will take work, and could cause family or community backlash. Ultimately, your actions will determine who you are. Certain actions will alter your physical appearance (You decide to grow a beard. This action results in +1 influence in arab cultures, and -1 when interacting with corporate executives)
This is just my off-the-top-of-my-head idea, but if anyone wants to collaborate JCCC4 would be a good test bed. Maybe we can change the world!
Please contribute to the discussion if this sounds interesting at all : )
