[CRUISE] Looking for Roommates and Rides and Stuff

edited July 2010 in JoCo Cruise
This discussion is dedicated to people who are seeking roommates for the JoCo Cruise Crazy fan cruise on Jan. 2-8, 2011 (http://www.jococruisecrazy.com), as well as anyone seeking to make joint travel plans (rides to & from the airport; going in on a hotel room together the night before the cruise; meetups before and/or after; etc.).

Have fun, and safe travels!

  • I'm looking for suitemates. Looking at the prices on the website, the best stateroom is $2400 and the cheapest is $600, so the math tells me to find 3 other awesome fans and get the best room on the boat. I looked at the floorplan and the virtual tour, it has one big bed and a pull out. We can alternate days or hold trivia contests to see who gets the bed for the night. I don't plan on sleeping much anyway. If I do it'll likely be on the pool deck anyway, heh. I am very serious here and would love to know if there is anyone else interested in going this route. You can email me directly at [email protected] if you want.

    > the best stateroom is $2400 and the cheapest is $600, so the math tells me to find 3 other awesome fans and get the best room on the boat.

Not exactly: prices are per person, based on double occupancy for any given cabin. i.e. two people in a $2,000 cabin would pay a total of $4,000 (plus some taxes/fees).

That said, there are incentives to have roommates:
    - If you're in a cabin by yourself, they charge a 50% premium (and 100% for suites)
    - The 3rd and 4th persons in a cabin only pay $299. So if four people were to team up in a $2,000 cabin and average out their berth fees, it would save a considerable amount:

    1st Berth: $2,000
    2nd Berth: $2,000
    3rd Berth: $299
    4th Berth: $299
    Total Berth Cost: $4,598
    Average Berth Cost: $1,149

This is in addition to the Entertainment Pass fee. ($320 per person)

Just didn't want there to be any confusion.

And yes, we know this is pretty expensive. Anyone with any questions regarding that, we refer here:

    http://jococruisecrazy.com/faq/#exp

    P&S
  • Bear in mind that those listed prices are *per person*, based on double occupancy. That is, the "best stateroom" (SA class) is $2399 each for the first two people (plus some taxes/fees); a third and fourth occupant would be $299 each (plus some taxes/fees). So the total for four people in the SA stateroom would be $5396 (plus blah blah blah).

This is in addition to the Entertainment Pass fee. ($320 per person)

Just didn't want there to be any confusion.

And yes, we know this is pretty expensive. Anyone with any questions regarding that, we refer here:

    Thanks!

    P&S.
  • Oh, thanks for that. I let my joy over the cruise cloud my reading comprehension skills. Would still love to see who is interested in sharing a larger room.
  • So the SB state room is $2199 for for 4 people with passes it would be

    2199
    2199
    299
    299
    320 x 4 (shows)
    76.80 x 4 (taxes)
    $77 x 4 (gratuity)
    _______________
    $6891.20
    /4
    _______________
    $1722.80

I'm in for that, just need to make it happen now.

I'm looking to share a room, and it seems to me it'd be more fun with more people in a room, because it's not as if we need to sleep or anything, and I don't know what kind of room yet because I'm too excited to read all the details and they all look like cup sizes to me, but I'm not terribly picky.

ETA: Oh, also, since we're also looking for rides and stuff, I would like some rides and stuff. I've been told that most tourists in Florida rent cars to get around because the public transport isn't very good, but I don't have a license. So as I said in the other thread, which you might not have seen if you were just linked here from the cruise site, I was thinking of going to visit Kennedy Space Center (somewhere near Orlando) before the cruise, and was wondering if any other geeks would like to visit it and/or travel from there to Fort Lauderdale with me. If car really is the only option then we can share costs etc. but I won't be able to share the driving so I could pay more gas or something.
  • well, I live in Ft. Lauderdale, and Cape Canaveral (Kennedy Space Center) is about a 2.5 hour drive north of here. It's a good trip if you've never been there. The shuttle hanger is awesome and the shuttle mover is sweet too.

Be aware that in an SB suite two people would need to share a sofa bed. (Although I'm pretty confused because this page has the same description for SA, SB and SC, and yet this page says that SC can only have three people in it, while the deck plan doesn't mention SA or SB at all but lists the same four sleeping places for SC. I don't know what these letters mean, and I was so confused when I first wrote this message that I forgot to even close my parentheses.)
  • I'm hoping to make this my first real vacation - that being said for it to be fun and affordable roommates will be necessary.

That being said I'd be down with rooming with pretty much anyone.

Just a curiousity though - any Canadians (or even better - Edmontonians) planning on going?
  • This looks like another one of those instances where I wish I possessed money, and lived closer to America-though I know Angelastic is going further.

    *sulk*
  • Well, anyone who's interested. Let's talk about what level of room we'd want to get. I'm up for basically any of them depending on how many we have.
  • I'm very, very interested. I can't commit quite yet, but I'm trying to put feelers out for anyone in the greater Lansing, MI area who might be going.
  • Well . . . since I'll already be down in Florida for the holidays, and don't have to return to work until Jan. 10th, I think it's a no-brainer. I wanna go! Might be looking for a roommate who's as cheapunderfunded as I am.

Too bad there's no discount for those of us who are, um, chronologically accomplished.
  • I live in Florida and would certainly be OK with roommate(s). My only request is that anyone who rooms with me have some tolerance for video gaming, as I'm hoping to bring my PlayStation 3, packed with Rock Band 2 (actually will be Rock Band 3 by the time this cruise rolls around), with plastic instruments, including almost all songs available in the game (almost 1300 songs in my Rock Band 2 setlist as I type this), especially JoCo as well as from P&S. Anyone interested in (idly) rocking out in between events?
  • So I've looked at the room category descriptions, and I still don't understand what the difference is between the various two-letter abbreviations in each category, but anyway I think I'd like a room with a verandah and I'm not too convinced by the benefits of the more expensive suites, though maybe I could be persuaded. Okay, so bigger towels might help me to flag down a bigger spaceship, but will the spaceship be as awesome as the cruise ship?

Also… asking geeks half of which discovered JoCo through Still Alive if they have tolerance for video gaming… hehehe. I think I can tolerate that as long as you invite everyone to the room for an awesome rock band party. Though I'm not sure this is necessary; the entertainment page says:
we hope to include a Q&A session with Jonathan; Movie Night(s); rooms for RPGs, board games and/or “song circles”; ”Rock Band” performances; ”JoCo Karaoke”; and who knows what else.
  • Based on the deck plans, I assume that different two-letter abbreviations in the same category mean slightly different layouts or desirability (e.g. the two large cabins at the aft corners are SB on higher decks, SC on lower decks). The lowest priced cabins likely have a lot of engine noise etc in addition to the lack of view.
  • SA, SB, and SC are all "Deluxe Veranda Suites" so you get all of the suite perks, with the following being the most coveted free laundry & drycleaning, priority boarding and tendering (keep in mind 2 of the 3 ports are tender ports), breakfast service at the Pinnacle, and access to the Neptune Lounge. Notice how HAL doesn't specify the exact size of the suites but give you a range between 500-700 sq ft? That's because not only are SA, SB, and SC staterooms different in size, but the cabins may vary even within the sub-category. The lower SC suites are larger than the higher SC suites. The views are usually fabulous because the corner aft cabins have wrap around decks. Since the Eurodam is one of HAL's newest ships, the engine noise shouldn't be that bad unless you are in one of the interior cabins on a lower deck. The BEST place online to find information on cruises are the boards at cruisecritic.com. Most of the stuff I wrote was lifted from a thread titled "SC Suites on Eurodam". BTW, one of the posters actually stayed in SC6175 and put up some photos so you can see what the suite & balcony looks like... oh right, hi everyone, I'm Shirley, and I'm a cruise-a-holic!
  • Well I would be happy to lend my expert level guitar and bass playing to the team. Sounds like this is a real possibility. I've never been on a cruise longer than a day, so any help someone could lend would be great. I have no problem with any configuration people would want to do. Can we pick the exact room we'll be in? I'll give the cruiseline a call tomorrow to see what rooms are available. Icemage, kpautz, angelastic and anyone else. What's your preference? I think for the vacation of this magnitude, it would be worth going all out for one of the staterooms with all the trimmings. I'm not too long out of college, so abnormal sleeping arrangements are no stranger to me. I just hope there are still some of those first 250 passes available.
  • Rock band in between sessions of awesome would be, well, awesome. I'm thinking about going all out too as it's my first trip, though of course that would depend on the cost those I would be rooming with would find comfortable.
  • edited July 2010
Well this will be my first ever cruise, so I could certainly be tempted to go all out, I'm just wondering whether some of the extras on the more expensive cabins would simply make it too much awesome to even begin to take advantage of, or worse, encourage staying in the awesome suite instead of doing things with other people. I know I won't bother watching any of the DVD library which is available in the superior suites, for example [ETA: unless they have MST3K, which I suppose I should get familiar with], and I don't particularly care about having a fruit bowl, flowers, or a special lounge to be hoity-toity in. Then there are things like high-tea service in-suite which seem like they'd just mean less opportunity to interact with all the other awesome JoCo fans on-board. But a whirlpool would be neat, and what's this about an exclusive daily breakfast service in deluxe suites? Aren't all our meals already included?
  • Meals at the buffets are free. Stuff like the fancy-shmancy on-board restaurants are not.

I'm so envious of you guys right now. I'm seriously tempted to plunk down the $2,000 or so (factoring in airfare and cash during the trip) right now.
  • @whatsyourken Personally I think one of the V cabins with an occupancy of 3-4 would suit me fine; enough to pack a bunch of people and rock out, while keeping costs reasonable. I'm up for whatever, but I don't personally want to get anything lower than F, as the smaller cabins will not accommodate a Rock Band setup properly. I think the S staterooms are a bit overkill, but if that's what people want I can go with those; I just think they're probably a wasted expense considering the many other things we'll have going on during the cruise.
  • I agree with Icemage pretty much word-for-word, except that I don't really mind about the space for Rock Band since I'm not bringing a Rock Band setup, and also I'd prefer not to go lower than VF, because hey, if I'm on a boat, I may as well be able to sit on a verandah and pretend I'm on a boat boat rather than a small island town.

Same with me, Icemage, if I was to commit (which I seriously hope I can).
  • Does anyone particularly care whether their roommates are male or female? I don't particularly mind, I'm unlikely to get changed in front of them or attempt to mate with them either way. Just thought I should ask in case we all agreed on a room type and then suddenly somebody said, for example, 'ewww, a girl, we can't have that because girls are icky/I am a geek and cannot socialise with girls/my girlfriend would get jealous/girls leave the toilet seat down/I'm a good $RELIGION_OR_MORAL_QUALITY man and wouldn't dare share a bedroom with a member of the opposite sex/I'm a [REDACTED] man and I'm afraid if I were left alone in the room with a girl there would be more than just seamen everywhere! Let's find someone else!' Better to mention it straight off if you have any particular preference. By the way, in case anyone didn't know or hadn't guessed, I am in fact female.
  • In my experience, there are three things you use your cruise-ship cabin for:

      a) luggage storage
      b) showering and changing
      c) sleeping
You don't need a big fancy cabin for those things.

Also? Hello? Cruise ship! Warm ocean breezes, big water, starry skies, non-stop food, exotic (fake, overpriced but nonetheless exotic) ports of call. Not to mention all the entertainment planned just for the JoCo minions. You're not really going to want to stay in your cabin and play Rock Band.

And yes, if I'm sounding like your mother, it's because I'm old enough to be her. And you kids get off my lawn.
  • @kpautz

I just came back two weeks ago from a one week trip to Atlantic City, NJ (went to compete in a Rock Band tournament there) and while we did do quite a lot of stuff outside, some of the best times were the parties in my hotel room with a bunch of people, some liquid courage, and a full Rock Band setup. :)

In any case, who is ready to commit funds right now? I know I can, and I'd hate to miss out on the early booking bonus.
  • @Icemage

I can just imagine the great time you had in Atlantic City! Hope the tournament went well. Just sayin' that you shouldn't miss out on the actual holy-crap-I'm-on-this-giant-boat-out-in-the-middle-of-the-ocean-and-wearing-short-sleeves-in-January thing.

I just booked. Got a cheapo single down in the bilges so I can be nerdishly anti-social if the need arises. ;-)

That being said, I'll be driving over from southwest Florida (Punta Gorda) and if I can help anyone out with a ride, let me know.
  • @everyone I'm totally fine with the V level rooms. It's a big boat. I'm sure we'll be out and about quite a bit. The V level ones don't look like they'll be able to hold a rock band set up at all. In fact, I'm not sure how we'd sleep 4 people in there. I can bring my sleeping bag and sleep on the balcony a couple nights. I'm assuming there will be Rock band spaces provided for us anyway. P&S's room for example. I'm not opposed to rooming with girls or guys. We're all nerds.

I can def committ now. Let's work it out.
  • Also @everyone, I'm also down for V level room (I'd want a balcony to be honest) and I'm also unsure how we would fit 4 people in a room - though I'm sure there's a way to make it work (sleeping bags, etc). I'm not picky about roommates - though I do appreciate my sleep I'm sure I'll be too excited about the whole cruise/first vacation thing to be a party pooper. I'm about 90% committed at this point (I just need to sort out exactly where my funds are coming from).

As for me as a roommate, I'm generally quiet (though when I get comfortable with people my vocal range can get louder), can be a bit anti-social (like any stereotypical nerd) but love to have fun and wail to rock band (I can sing pretty good but I enjoy calling my rock band time "wailing").
  • @ kpautz

I live in Florida, so short sleeves in January isn't unusual for me!

    @ whatsyourken

The V rooms look fine for Rock Band; the pic on the booking site looks to be one of the 3-person occupancy rooms but you don't actually need a ton of room as long as you have somewhere to put the drum kit. The plastic guitars are wireless, so those players can roam anywhere, and the microphones have nice long wires that can go more or less anywhere. I've actually played on the upcoming Rock Band 3 keyboard peripheral as well, and it's not terribly large either. I'll try to contact Holland America and see if they've had people do anything like this before.

If anything, I'm more concerned about noise / vibration when doing this; having someone stomp on a drum pedal isn't the most quiet thing you can do in a room, and the V rooms are on the upper deck I think? The only other concern on that front is the placement of the TV; it needs to be situated someplace where most anyone in the room can clearly see it.

How do we want to handle booking? Since we're sort of coming in from all over the place, it might be smart for one person to book it and get reimbursed by everyone else, but that leaves someone with a lot of liabilities if anyone backs out. I'll try contacting Insight Cruises tomorrow regarding how much of the costs need to be paid up front (just in case we do get someone who backs out and thus increasing the individual costs).
  • If this ship is anything like the ships I've been on in the past, there is no reason to have a small party with a group of friends in your room. There are lots of nooks and crannys and small public rooms where you can get together with your friends. And alcohol will be EVERYWHERE.
  • @Icemage
According to the FAQ, you can pay the cruise lines an initial payment of $350 per person, and pay the rest off by October 1st. This does not include the price of the entertainment ticket.

I am very interested in attending this, having never been on a cruise before, a big fan of the entertainment, and probably going to be sorely in need of a vacation by then. I am trying to see if any friends are interested, but if not, I will be looking for some room mates!
  • I won't be able to commit until closer to September. I just bought a tiny little house of my own and I need furniture! I won't hold my breath on being one of the 1st-250 but hopefully there will still be folks looking for a roommate then. For now I'm just going to be the annoying person who keeps throwing out random comments/suggestions. :)

Here's what the FAQ says about sharing a room and paying separately:

Can my roommate(s) and I pay separately?

Yes; when you go through the booking process, the page where you enter payment information will allow you to
enter separate payment information for any or all of the people staying in your cabin(s). Make sure you have
everyone’s billing information when you begin the booking process.

The non-suite triples will have a twin (sometimes full) sofabed for the third person. Non-suite quads typically have the sofabed & an "upper berth" which is like a bunk bed (complete with its own little ladder!) either over the regular beds or the sofa that comes down from the ceiling or opens up from a wall. Your room steward will set up the beds during turndown service every night and hide them every morning when (s)he makes up the room.

There definitely will be alcohol everywhere and the ships will usually have some sort of wine package and "beer by the bucket" and "special drink of the day" deals and the bartenders are usually terrific. But remember alcohol is not included so those drinks can really add up! Oh, one question roomies-to-be make want to ask: smoking or non? HAL is one of the few lines left that permits smoking in the cabins as well as on the balconies. I believe they recently moved to a policy where smoking has largely been banned from all restaurants.
  • Non-smoking, non-snoring geek seeks same. :)

I'm ready to commit now, in fact I'd like to, to be in the first 250 (I have to be within panty-throwing range!), and get on with booking flights and getting a biometric passport or visa or whatever it is I need to go to the US now.
I just booked. Got a cheapo single down in the bilges so I can be nerdishly anti-social if the need arises. ;-)
There are singles? They're not listed on the pricing page.

If anyone else wants to be nerdishly anti-social, they could always go to the gym, which should be empty. ;-)
  • Well, that's 3 of us that can commit. Non-smoking, non-snoring. We can try for one of the occupancy 3 rooms like V, VA, or VE. If that sounds ok, kpautz & Angelastic, please send me a private message to confirm you've seen this (click on my name, and select "send private message" on the left), and we'll take this conversation further via either email or instant messenger services.
  • I'm about 72% certain I can commit. I'm probably not going to sign up today to make sure it isn't a completely spur of the moment decision, but I'm fairly optimistic I won't change my mind. I'm a non-smoking, non-snoring (as far as I know) male for anyone who would want to split the room cost. I'm not opposed to any of the rooming suggestions already in this thread. We're all JoCo fans here; I'm sure I'll have a blast no matter who I'm rooming with. I've never been on a cruise before.
  • You people have far too much spare cash....

    (damn you.)

Joe... NOT envious in the SLIGHTEST!
    SRSLY!!!

    (bugger)
  • Regarding cabin prices...

According to Neil at InSight Cruises, the differences in prices between the subcategories of cabins have to do with ship position. Generally speaking, prices go up for cabins that are on higher decks and/or located in the center of the ship (less movement). Be sure to check out the deck plan for the ms Eurodam.
  • edited July 2010
Also according to Neil at InSight, you have until September 30 to change details of your reservation at no charge. So if you're anxious to be part of the first 250 but haven't finalized your roommate arrangements yet, you can always alter your room assignment after booking.

Neil seems very nice and I hope not everyone makes his life more difficult, but InSight seems happy to accommodate the inevitable variables.
  • I'm so excited about this trip... I'd be flying out from San Francisco (it's a bit far for a road trip) and am interested in finding a roommate to share a stateroom. But unlikely some of y'all, I actually need to sleep occasionally at night. So I'd like to agree to keep the partying out of the cabin and just make that a safe place to change and crash when needed.

I'm ok with either an interior or outside stateroom; I figure there are lots of outside places on the deck if I feel like doing the leaning against the rail thing. Non-smoking only, though.

To be honest, I can't guarantee non-snoring -- that depends a lot on environmental factors and with the recycled air in the cabins it's hard to predict, but if it happens it's usually fairly mild. I'm fine with using earplugs for people who occasionally snore or who use a cpap.

Not to be genderist -- I don't mind having a male roommate, but would want to meet in person first before agreeing to share. So unless you're coming from Northern California, sharing with another nerd chick would probably be a lot simpler.
  • Chicazul: Are you... researching? ;-)
  • Colleen: ...maybe. I might also have started designing cocktail dresses. And you?
  • Hey all, I'm a nonsmoking, nonsnoring female who is looking for roomates. I'd prefer to get one of the Veranda-Deluxe quads... that's the cheapest room that still has a balcony. VD and VC look nice, VF is similar but has an opaque steel balcony wall rather than a clear plexi one, based on some poking about I did on the ship diagram.
  • Are we supposed to wear cocktail dresses for the cocktail? Because I have a couple of formal-looking dresses I never wear and I have a belt clip for my iPhone in case of pocket deficiency but I can't figure out where the iPhone would attach to the dress. How do normal girls do this?
  • Angel: a clutch or small purse usually does the trick. Alternately you could wear a fancy shrug to conceal one of these:

    http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/bags/918a/?cpg=froogle

Also, did you guys book your room yet? I know Icemage was trying to get something together, and if you could use a fourth...
  • I'm still waiting to hear back from people. kpautz already booked himself a smaller room, but I'm still open to sharing a room; if I don't get a confirmation by the end of this weekend I will book a room alone and hope for the best, but I'd really like to get one of those 3-occupancy rooms like V, VA, or VE.
  • I just noticed this on the booking page: alternately, on Page 2 of the booking process, you can select to join InSight’s “Guaranteed Share” program, which will pair you up in a double-occupancy cabin with another JoCo Cruise Crazy attendee of the same sex.
  • edited July 2010
@ Angelastic that works too, but you can only get double occupancy that way (both of you pay full price); if you want to split the room with 3 or 4 people you need to make other arrangements.
  • Unfortunately my friends are not going to be able to be joining me on this excursion.

I am a non-smoking, non-snoring, Rock Band/Dominion loving male. I would prefer to try and get one of the nicer rooms; as long as I am going on vacation, a little extra money seems worth it. I would like to be able to get some sleep here or there, but do not particularly mind of festivities are brought back to the room now and again. I will be flying down to Florida from Maryland, if anyone else plans on traveling from BWI.

Hit me up if you would like any more info about me / need another person for your group!
