The Birchmere February 20

edited January 2009 in JoCo Music
I just got my tickets yesterday, so hubby and I will be there. Anyone else going? Look for the lady in the Pi-rat hat and say hi!

  • oooooh, oooooh mee! Meeee! Just bought my tickets the other night (after a frantic few moments thinking it was sold out: turns out you have to hit "find tickets" not just the enter button on ticketmaster )
I have also cohersed bribed strong-armed er, invited a bunch of friends and right now there's looking to be about 7 of us.

Last year it was easier b/c I worked only 15 min away in Springfield, but now I work nearly 45 min away so I'll be leaving work insanely early so I can get good seats, preferably within an 'opening-band-panty-hurling' range.

Awesome pic JoAnn...I'm sure the fellow minion that took that pic would maintain that it certainly did *not* look like Storm was poking you in the boobie through the view finder, I swear! (If you need me to take yet more incriminating photos, Iemme know ;-)

Yes! People should come up and say hi to me as well if you see me (ignore the fact Paul is nearly dislocating my shoulder in the pic...)
  • My friend just tried to get tickets to the Birchmere show but it seems that they are all sold out (boo!, er, yay? er...wait...)
Anyhew, she asked if I would post to see if anyone had a spare ticket. If you do and would be willing to sell it, we'll even buy you a beer (or a soda if you are under 21).

    Thank you much.
  • Last time this was brought up, we were discussing the possibility of my showing up at this. If my relative inactivity on Birchmere-related topics hasn't signaled it already, I should say this isn't so much of a possibility any more, I'm afraid, not least because apparently no tickets are left. (Also I don't have a fast, cheap, convenient way to get there from Boston.)
  • But should miracles happen ( JoCo reading this and ordering a ticket for you, for example) the offer of a free room is still open!
  • Well shoot... my boyfriend and I were really looking forward to going, it never occurred to me to worry about actually getting tickets until they were all gone! If anyone has 2 tickets to spare (or your friends can't go, or anything) and would be willing to sell please let me know, we'd be so appreciative. Otherwise, see you all there, I will be the girl outside trying to see if anyone will part with tickets! :-/
  • Well it looks like one of my worst fears have been confirmed. If anyone has a spare ticket, please let me know!
  • Well, Bry has been quoted as saying...
[T]he performance record will show that the DC area (Vienna or Alexandria, VA) is the actual "SF of the East Coast."
If that is the case, then the Birchmere is the Great American Music Hall of the East Coast. Big concerts, quick sellouts.
  • @Kat, HAL and other looking for tix: Should be noted that P&S recently posted on their main page that "A few last-minute tix may be available at the box office that night, though we can’t promise anything" for both Birchmere and Rams Head. Best of luck to anyone trying! Get there early! Hope you make it in, Kat, HAL9000!
  • Thank you Ann for the info! Definitely worth a shot...
  • I have an extra ticket... please let me know if anyone is still looking for a seat...
  • Every time I see a discussion on the Birchmere, I can't help but reminisce about that wonderful evening I had there. It was a great venue. Sounds like it may be too small now for JoCo though.
  • Do you still have that ticket laurelli2?
  • What year were you on our side of the pond, Kerrin? The '07 or '08 show? Hope you enjoyed our fair little town of Alexandria :-)

For a few days there it looked like I wouldn't be able to make this show b/c I had to suddenly leave town for an emergency, but tomorrow morning I'm loading up on coffee and driving the 4 hrs back to DC. Someone have a beer and a coffee waiting for me at the venue...
  • (Kerrin was at the 08-31-2007 show, as were forumgoers Jinx and Buggy, and also me.)
  • (Kerrin was at the 08-31-2007 show, as were forumgoers Jinx and Buggy, and also me.)
And they were all so friendly to me. It made a perfect evening...erm....more perfect?

Have fun tonight y'all. I'm sure you will.
  • Hal 9000

I have been asked by a few people now about the extra ticket. At this point, it has been given to another desperate JoCo fan.

  • Hey, Birchmere concert-goers, JC is taking requests on Twitter, as has become his new habit.
  • It cracks me up when he asks for requests, and people request Re: Your Brains. Like he's not going to play that anyway.

I'm not going to the show, and I'm not on Twitter, but I'd request "Vienna" if I could.
  • I just tweeted the request for you.
  • *gak* I'm twitter-less and getting ready to leave for the show! Someone twitter a request for "Laptop Like You" or "Kennesaw". Oh and someone tell P&S "Better Version" or "Int'l Language"!
  • I'm on it, Ann!
  • w00t, a request for Laptop Like You from someone who is actually going! This might work better than my earlier request.
  • I'm still hoping when they come to NYC, Paul and Storm decide to do one hour long set of Randy Newman themes.
  • Oh and someone tell P&S "Better Version" or "Int'l Language"!
International Language! That's the one I keep thinking "they should do live" then forgot when they actually asked for live suggestions!

I'm still hoping when they come to NYC, Paul and Storm decide to do one hour long set of Randy Newman themes.
It would be a very interesting experiment to see how long the audience would stick with them, if they did the entire 25 Days of Newman.

If I were requesting a P&S song, I would request Internet Porn. Hilarious!

ETA: That's a recording from the Bob & Tom Show. Hearing the guys (Bob and Tom, I assume) laughing in the background is half the fun....
  • Hearing the guys (Bob and Tom, I assume) laughing in the background is half the fun....
Agreed. I always prefer the on-air versions on "News to Us" over the studio versions.

Also, I haven't heard that song in ages. Thanks for the link :)

I just tweeted the request for you.
Thanks CoolJammer.... (and I'm a he by the way :)

Sooooooo..... shows over, anyone up and feel like telling us about it? Setlist? I know he played Kenesaw Mountain Landis.

Hopefully someone there had a decent camcorder!
  • Well, I just staggered my tired butt back in from the show. Wow, that was several kinds of awesome. Much thanks to Colleenky!! We got both 'Better Version" and "Kennesaw"! and afterwards I told him I went through you from the forum to request KML he went "Oh. Oh! Yeah! I saw that!"

Hmm, briefly (b/c I'm tired) what else?
-The snuggies. Oh God, the snuggies. I think I started to hyperventilate I laughed so hard. I made sure to get video proof so they will never live it down.
-Even with Paul's alleged sore throat, P&S were awesome as always. Made my little minion heart happy.
-Jonathan had a pretty eclectic set and naturally blamed it on the internets, but it was a fun blend of old and new set lists. Afterwards he told me it was a odd mix but he really liked it.
-A long JoCo rant about cylons, harmonicas, Darth Vader and why he keeps spacing out on stage. And they think P&S fans have ADD?
-JoCoPaSto Birchmere shows are eventually going to end up being all Neil Diamond, all the time. We got both 'Crackin' Rosie' AND 'Sweet Caroline'
    - 'Space Doggity' w/ P&S on back up vocals: wow. Just wow. Loved the arrangement.

Lex, I recently stumbled upon this live version of Int'l Language, and it was only sung b/c it was a called out request. The song makes me giggle like an idiot every time.
  • The snuggies. Oh God, the snuggies.
Hmmm, you'll have to elaborate on that!
I made sure to get video proof
    Cool, looking forard to that!
A long JoCo rant about cylons, harmonicas, Darth Vader and why he keeps spacing out on stage.
Wow, I hope you got video proof of that too.

    Thanks for the details Ann!
  • Glad I could help, Ann. I don't know how much good I did, because a few folks asked for KML on Twitter. I do think "we" were the only ones to request Better Version, though, so there's that. Thanks for the update! :-)
  • Setlist, anybody?

    For the wiki....

I had such a blast these last two nights! And I took notes for you guys.
Here are the set lists from the Birchmere and Ram's Head Annapolis (poor Ram's Head, doesn't have it's own thread...)

And Ann, I agree, Space Doggity is among the prettiest things I've ever heard the three of them sing together. I was blown away.
(PnS didn't use the snuggies at Ram's Head. I asked why, they said they were too hot. I commented on all the dog hair flying off of them when they waved around, and how funny that was, and Paul said, "And that was AFTER I put them through the dryer TWICE!")
I also have a partial set list from Birchmere and full set list from Ram's Head for Paul and Storm. Say so if you want me to post them.

    Yay Gina! You rock, thanks!

Hoping for video of that Space Doggity....

ETA: Am I the only one who LOVES how JoCo is mixing up his setlist lately, but is slightly disapointed he's taken The Future Soon out of the regular rotation? For some reason it just doesn't seem like a full JoCo show without it.
  • My husband had never heard "Space Doggity" before, and kept commenting in a semi-mournful tone "It was so saaaad!". So total win for JoCo on that one, yup yup yup.
  • there are a few Birchmere videos up here
  • I'm glad he played Doggity. A friend of mine from another forum was going, and wanted to hear it, so I launched off a twitter request. No doubt he was going to play it anyway, since it seems to have become a setlist regular, but it's nice to think I played a part in that.
  • Ooh, he's doing The Saturday Boy.
  • Oo! He's been practicing Someone Is Crazy. It has evolved since the recent San Francisco show. (I'm thinking specifically of the new walking base line leading into the chorus.) Also, even at the San Fran show, I noticed that he's changed the words from "She can change the game / She can make you say you're sorry" to "She can handle me / She can make me say I'm sorry." Wonder why.
  • I have a feeling it's cause he only has a vague grasp of the words. See the most recent performance, where he changed one of the lines to "She does...something else!"
  • I thought the words *were* 'she can change the game she can make ME say I'M sorry' ...?
  • edited February 2009
It is (I just checked. It was that way on the lyrics page, and I listened to the song, just in case)

The "me say I'm" way, that is.

The previous line did change, though.
  • (Miss Pedantic Pants is hanging her head in shame.)

I'm pretty excited - I just uploaded my first video to youtube! I'll be posting more videos over the days, but the first one is up - JoCo playing The Saturday Boy at Ram's Head on 2/21!
    Watch in high quality!
(That's me in the beginning saying, "But you're awesome!" It was in reaction to him saying the song spoke to him because it's about inadequacy, which you can kind of make out as the video begins.)
  • Now Dance, SoJo, Dance is up - couldn't help singing along a little!
  • Thanks for putting those up Gina, those are great. Especially since there aren't many videos of either song on youtube already. Did you happen to get the Space Doggity that everyone's raving about?

Also, how'd he do on the lyrics to The Presidents? I think I'd feel cheated if I went to a JoCo show and he did that song, and got all the lyrics right :)

I'm going to upload the Space Doggity from Birchmere, but the sound is not great on my video. It's just from my point and shoot... But hopefully you can get the idea how grand it was.
Even though I have an 8gb card, I wasn't sure how much video I could take, so I had to pick and choose what to record. The beginnings are cut off of some of the videos I'm going to put up. This includes the Skullcrusher Mountain with Cracklin' Rose leading in, plus JoCo talks about the monkey/pony monster (placed onstage during the song) at the end. It's very impressive.

I don't know when I'll get things up but I will post here as soon as I do.
As I recall, he did The Presidents fine at the Birchmere, and had a very small pause at one point at Ram's Head.
  • That's me in the beginning saying, "But you're awesome!"
    You're an experienced cheerleader. ;-)
  • Skullcrusher w/Cracklin' Rose lead in is up. I think you will enjoy this quite a bit. I know I did!

I wish I'd gotten the beginning. He started with the opening strums of Skullcrusher and totally faked us out by singing Cracklin' Rose. It was great.
  • Space Doggity @ Birchmere is up. Plus some others, look at my other videos.
  • OK, that last video hit a little too close to home. (I accidentally killed a hamster when I was a kid.)
